Appealing if uneventful. This humanistic story involves an old Chinese widow who resides in San Francisco with her 30-year-old daughter. Though she has lived for many years in America, the widow is proud of her Chinese heritage and refuses to assimilate into American culture. She loves her daughter but feels the time has come for her, like her brother and sister, to be wed. Her daughter is torn between wanting to marry her boyfriend, a Los Angeles doctor, and the duty she feels toward her mother. When the mother learns from a fortune teller that she is approaching her time to die, the old woman must make some drastic changes in her attitudes. DIM SUM: A LITTLE BIT OF HEART is composed of small moments commenting in ways both broad and subtle on assimilation. Director Wayne Wang understands these problems, allowing scenes to build slowly and letting the audience get to know the characters. The universality of this comedy's subject matter makes it a gentle pleasure. leave a comment
