DIFFERENT FOR GIRLS
starstarstarstar
Calling all transsexuals, anyone considering gender-reassignment surgery, all those involved in relationships with transsexuals and even the merely curious: Boy/Girl, are you going to love this movie, which handles its tricky subject with maturity, honesty and sensitivity. Belligerent Paul (Rupert Graves) and shy Karl (Steven Macintosh) were close friends in high school, but subsequently lost touch. Nothing much has changed for Paul, now an immature, 34-year-old punk, still greasy, loud, irresponsible and irritating. Superficially, plenty has changed for Karl, who's undergone surgery to remove his unwanted "growth" and been reborn as Kim. But Kim leads a colorless, empty existence, until Paul quite literally crashes back into her life. On her way to work one morning, Kim's cab collides with Paul's motorcycle, and their awkward reunion forces both to examine themselves, their lives, their private parts and their friendship. Part of that examination develops into one of the more unusual sex scenes you're likely to see on the screen anytime soon. The movie's performances are excellent: Graves was born to play the blustering Paul, but Macintosh steals the show with his fine, delicate portrait of Kim. A chick flick with a difference. leave a comment
