McLaglen plays the role of the famous English highwayman, here riding to York to stop a forced marriage and losing his beloved mare Black Bess in doing so. The producers took their lumps for selecting McLaglen for the title role, but he turns in a hearty performance in a production where
there are occasional slips, unusual considering the British pride in the quality of their work.
