The first of three movie serials based on Chester Gould's comic strip about the latern-jawed lawman, which debuted in 1931 as public interest in public enemies like Al Capone was on the upswing, this low-budget, multi-part saga was also cut down into standard movie length version. Tracy (Ralph Byrd, who played the charcter in movies through the 1940s, then stepped into a short-lived TV series) and his associates, Steve Lockwood (Fred Hamilton), Junior (Lee Van Atta) and Mike McGurk (Smiley Burnette), try to stop the Spider Ring, which is led by a criminal mastermind known only as "The Lame One." The gang's whose dastardly deeds include trying to detroy the Golden Gate Bridge, shooting down a passenger blimp and attempting to steal the plans for a revolutionary high-speed aircraft, and the Lame One leader will stop at nothing -- even hypnotizing Tracy's brother and turning him into a stealth assassin -- to get Tracy off the case. Justice prevails and while the unveiling of the Lame One is anticlimactic, the adventure moves along at a fast clip.. leave a comment
