Goddard is an enterprising young chambermaid who wants nothing more than to wed a rich man. As love would have it, a penniless valet becomes enamored of her. He tries to win her the only way he can--by killing his wealthy employer and taking his riches. A much praised and criticized film. This was a product of Jean Renoir, one of France's greatest directors. Although Renoir was known for his realism and deep-focus photography, this picture, done during the director's Hollywood years, reeks of studio artificiality. Upon its release, it brought disillusionment in the studio system and in Renoir by his French patrons. Perhaps egotistically, but accurately, too, they insisted that his best work was done in France. Renoir, however, was still Renoir, with or without the studio pressuring him, and his strong humanism and morality break through here. A brilliant film which synthesizes the serious and the comic, a direction begun with his classic THE RULES OF THE GAME. leave a comment
