The Devil's Rain

1975, Movie, PG, 85 mins

This negligible low-budget horror film, set in the Southwest but shot in Mexico, surprisingly boasts a big cast of recognizable faces. The story concerns Skerritt's efforts to locate his missing family. The trail leads to a cult of Satanists controlled by Borgnine, who is the reincarnation of a 17th-century witch. Borgnine captures a bunch of souls in a bottle, but his plan backfires when the bottle is broken, the souls are released, and the "Devil's Rain" descends upon the cult, melting them. Uniformly dull and predictable, save for the sight of Borgnine turning into a goat-headed demon--not much of a stretch, perhaps--and Travolta (in a small role) melting along with the rest of the cast. Occultists may recognize Satanic guru Anton La Vey in a small supporting role (he's also billed as technical advisor). The film was rereleased after SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER with Travolta's name given top billing, even though he's barely in evidence on-screen. leave a comment
