Average programmer stars Morris as a Navy submarine commander and Dix as his buddy, the US Navy's best deep-sea diver. Dix weds the coy Del Rio, a dance-hall girl, who makes a sucker of him by falling for Morris when Dix is away on duty. Dix dumps Del Rio and puts his hurt feelings aside when Morris goes down in a sunken submarine. Dix saves Morris and everyone salutes as the fleet sails off. The underwater sequences where Dix rescues Morris and his crew are surprisingly well done. The great Irish short story writer and author of The Informer, Liam O'Flaherty, who worked on DEVIL'S PLAYGROUND with Jerome Chodorov and Dalton Trumbo, must have breezed through this commonplace tale, his first of two ventures in Hollywood and probably as far as he would ever get in spirit and style from his native Aran Islands. Remake of SUBMARINE (1928). leave a comment
