1957, Movie, NR, 83 mins

This competent but unexciting auto racing film was produced, directed, and cowritten by its star, Cornel Wilde, who plays Nick, a onetime champion driver who left racing after an accident caused by his recklessness permanently injured his younger brother. He comes out of retirement for one more big race, however, and many of the drivers who abhor his arrogance and "win at all costs" philosophy hunger for the opportunity to give him some of his own medicine on the track. But Nick is a changed man, and in a duel in the treacherous Devil's Hairpin (where his brother's accident occurred), he backs off for safety's sake, winning back the approval of his long-suffering mother (Mary Astor). The plot motivations and parade of characters that precede the racing footage are slow, dull, and confusing, but the racing itself is well shot. Playing Wilde's hard-drinking ex is his offscreen spouse, Jean Wallace. leave a comment
