DEUCE BIGALOW: EUROPEAN GIGOLO

Since fish-tank-cleaner-turned-gigolo Deuce Bigalow (Rob Schneider) last offered his services to needy women, he's left the man-whore business, gotten married, been widowed in an unfortunate incident involving a shark and invented a shark-warning device that inadvertently turns a school of dolphins into cackling berserkers while they're swimming with blind old folks. A phone call from his old pimp, T.J. (Eddie Griffin), extolling the virtues of Amsterdam, couldn't have come at a better time. Unfortunately, Deuce arrives just a serial killer is cutting a bloody swath through the city's "prosti-dudes," and T.J. is suspected of being the killer. Deuce books dates with the dead hustlers' clients in hopes of finding clues and clearing T.J., and services a parade of hunchbacked, elephant-eared, hygiene-challenged ladies to the oh-so-clever accompaniment of the Tubes' "She's a Beauty." That there will be a sight gag involving the woman with a penis for a nose (Miranda Raison) and the one with the over-large tracheotomy hole is a given; the only surprise is how long the movie takes to deliver. He also begins dating the lovely Eva (Hanna Verboom), who's afflicted with OCD and is the niece of Inspector Gaspar Voorsboch (Jeroen Krabbe), who's investigating the call-boy murders and has absolutely no doubt that T.J. is the killer. This bare-bones plot is merely an excuse to string together a series of gross-out jokes involving bodily fluids, private parts, food and genetic deformities. Ironically, given the film's wholehearted commitment to the repellent sight gag (the consequences of Miss Penis-nose's sneezing fit in a crowded restaurant is a stomach churner, though T.J.'s willingness to eat frites out of the toilet is pretty rank, too), its funniest moments come courtesy of a running verbal joke involving specialty sexual services, a surprisingly restrained variation on the notorious joke dissected in the documentary THE ARISTOCRATS (2005). The services include the deliciously smutty-sounding Turkish Snow Cone, Filthy Lopez, Irish Facial, Portuguese Breakfast, Chili Rainbow and Sneaky Castro, which also comes in Extra Sneaky. The restraint lies in leaving the nature of the acts to the imagination. Veteran actor Krabbe's participation in this juvenile farrago is an object lesson in why you should listen to your gut (Krabbe's, by his own account, prompted him to ask why on earth he was offered "this crazy movie") rather than your teenage son. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
