This gruesome and campy slasher picture makes suitable date-night fodder for couples who like to cling to each other during scary movies. Seven college pals learn that it just doesn't pay to attend desert raves. After a night of loud music and al fresco drugs, drive back to civilization, Neil (Brent Taylor), Tara (Ashley Elizabeth), Loopz (Aaron Buer), Cashie (Kelsey Wedeen), Harmony (Danna Brady), Michelle (Jessica Osfar) and Lee (Ryan DeRouen) take a side trip to harvest a peyote field near an Indian burial ground, even after weird gas-station worker Petey (Anthony Connell) stomps their buzz. Distracted by a little girl who appears suddenly in his path, Neil wrecks their R.V. and then heads back to Petey's gas station/convenience store. Michelle and Lee hike up hills in search of a cell phone signal while Petey regales Neil with a hard-to-follow yarn about the area's strung-out cannibal population. But the fact is, the cannicals are for real and quickly dispatch Michelle, Lee and Petey, then run down Neil and decapitate him. Another cannibal spikes Cashie's drink and transforms her into a flesh-eater who attacks her pals. The cannibals pretend they're still holding Michelle and Neil captive, while Loopz, Harmony and Tara take refuge in a deserted a mine. Unfortunately, they're hiding in the lions' den, but manage to dupe the peyote-addicted cannibals. The question is how long the college kids will be able to outsmart their flesh-eating nemeses. Although this wrong turn chiller isn't a desert classic like the ferocious THE HILLS HAVE EYES (1978), director S. Lee Taylor knows how to stage a "jump out and shout boo!" sequence. It's a shame, though, that he and co-writer Steven Grabowsky made Loopz a white hip-hop wannabe; you shouldn't be rooting for the comic relief to get eaten first. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
