Destination Gobi

Set in Inner Mongolia during WW II, DESTINATION GOBI is a rather peculiar war tale, based in fact but heavy on the fiction, about a crack meteorological team sent to the desert to monitor weather conditions. When their commanding officer is killed during a Japanese attack, Chief Petty Officer Sam McHale (Richard Widmark) takes the reins and leads the men on an 800-mile trek to safety. Along the way, they receive assistance from the First Mongolian Cavalry of the US Navy, a group of Mongol tribesmen who demand 60 US Cavalry saddles as their only recompense.
