Schell and Vallone play two Polish brothers who escape from a Soviet labor camp and try to join the Polish Army, which is in exile across the border in Afghanistan. While they await the arrival of a smuggler who will take them across the border, the brothers rent a room in the home of Rey and his gorgeous wife, Papas.
