If the Germans had been as stupid and silly as they are in this film, WW II would have been over in weeks, but DESPERATE JOURNEY was made in 1942 when propaganda was the word. The film tells of an RAF bomber crew shot down over German-occupied Poland; eight men are in the plane, but only five survive the crash and subsequent travails. Flight Lt. Terrence Forbes (Errol Flynn) and his men--Johnny Hammond (Ronald Reagan), Kirk Edwards (Alan Hale), Jed Forrest (Arthur Kennedy), and Lloyd Hollis (Ronald Sinclair)--have no other choice but to sneak through Axis territory to make it back to Merry Olde. In the course of the picture, they are chased relentlessly by Nazi major Otto Baumeister (Raymond Massey), destroy a chemical factory, knock off several Germans, steal German uniforms, and masquerade as officers by pilfering Goering's car and taking it to an area near Berlin. A bomber is being prepared to attack London's water works, and Forbes and Hammond, the remaining members of the crew, steal the plane and fly across the channel. As he's about to land, Forbes says, "Now for Australia and a crack at those Japs!" DESPERATE JOURNEY was viewed at the time of its release as a ludicrous, comic-strip war adventure. That view has only been strengthened over the years. The film did, however, manage to get an Oscar nomination for its special effects. leave a comment
