DESOLATION ANGELS

At its best, Tim McCann's no-budget debut feature is reminiscent of John Cassavetes: Relentlessly downbeat (though surprisingly handsome), this uncompromising critique of masculine pride and passion breaks little new ground but stands out for its emotional honesty. In a working-class Brooklyn neighborhood, Nick (Michael Rodrick) does his best to cope with a dead-end job and a frustrating relationship with meek salesgirl Mary (Jennifer Thomas). Though a college graduate, Nick reverts to the brutal ethic of the street after Mary reveals that she has been raped by his best friend (Peter Bassett). Not a pleasurable experience in any ordinary sense of the word, DESOLATION ANGELS is a welcome antidote to all those unctuous comic dramas that sing the praises of Generation X. leave a comment
