Deranged: Review
An accurately recounted horror film inspired by the life of crazed Wisconsin farmer Ed Gein, who actually murdered, skinned and preserved body parts of dozens of women in the late 1950s. PSYCHO (1960) and THE TEXAS CHAIN-SAW MASSACRE (1974) were also inspired by Gein. Blossom is perfect as the middle-aged psychotic farmer whose domineering mother has warped his personality, turning him into a sick, dangerous killer. He studies the occult and, when Mom dies, preserves her body. As his madness progresses, he seeks out younger and more innocent victims to kill and stuff like trophies. A sick little film but told with a disturbing sense of humor. Writer and codirector Ormsby previously had done a marvelous little low-budget horror film entitled CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS (1972). They went on to write the screenplay for Paul Schrader's version of CAT PEOPLE (1982). The special makeup effects were done by Tom Savini, the favorite actor and special-effects man of George Romero, who made DAWN OF THE DEAD (1979). Producer Clark went on to make the stupid but successful PORKY'S (1981) and the outstanding Christmas film A CHRISTMAS STORY (1983).
