An ultra-low-budget entry, shot in Jackson, Michigan, THE DEMON LOVER features an occultist who wreaks vengeance on his flock after they abandon him. Between cheap gore effects, the film is filled with in-jokes for movie-genre and comic-book enthusiasts. All the character names are homages to the filmmakers' favorite horror-movie directors and comic-book artists: Kaluta, Frazetta, Gould, Jones, Foster, Wrightson, Corben, Adams, and Kirby are all big names in the comic-book field, and Romero, Peckinpah, and Ormsby are all directors and writers of violent films. (Ackerman refers to Forest J. Ackerman, publisher of Famous Monsters magazine.) Actor Gunnar Hansen is better known as "Leatherface" from THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE; Val Mayerick is a comic-book artist known for "Howard the Duck." leave a comment
