Big-budget French farce loosely based on Victor Hugo's play "Ruy Blas." De Funes is an ambitious nobleman who has been banished from the court for fathering the illegitimate child of one of the Queen's ladies-in-waiting. De Funes dresses his valet, Montand, as his nephew to get him into the court, so he can report any news. When another nobleman plants a bomb to kill the King and Queen, Montand saves them and is made the tax collector in return. Seeing his opportunity to redistribute the wealth, Montand taxes the rich instead of the poor; he soon feels the wrath of the nobles, who try to kill him. He is saved by De Funes, who arranges for Montand to be found in a compromising position with the Queen, thus dishonoring her. The plan goes awry and both Montand and De Funes are sold to Arab slave-traders, though the deposed nobleman plots to return some day. Good mix of fun, swashbuckling adventure, and light slapstick comedy. leave a comment
