This is an old-time action film that employs all the war cliches without a real war to depict, except for the one invented by producers Golan and Globus. Norris, backed up by Marvin, is a one-man army who dispatches bloodthirsty terrorists with the same calm precision he brought to his martial-arts films. Golan, who directs without much imagination, manipulates contemporary headlines to get the public into the theaters for another "fantasy through firepower," RAMBO-style. In this case, a TWA airliner was actually hijacked by terrorists in Athens and then flown to Beirut. There followed several trips back and forth to Algiers until the terror ended back in Beirut. The terrorists killed a US marine and had several passengers removed and held hostage in Beirut. In the film the terrorist operation is headed by Forster--who once he instructs the plane to head for Beirut, separates the Jewish men from the rest of the passengers. Also picked out are three young Navy recruits whom the terrorists insist on labeling marines. While the plane is in the air, Alexander and McKay join the exclusive antiterrorist military team--the "Delta Force"--ordered to Lebanon by the President to free the passengers. THE DELTA FORCE is yet another action film that seeks to satisfy popular frustrations by creating a fictitious situation in which it is possible to win a decisive victory against an elusive foe. Although producers Golan and Globus tell us that this makes for a healthy release of tension, one must wonder whether it is really better to oversimplify a complex situation to the point of absurdity, offering false solutions, than it is to deal with reality? The film abandonds any semblance of logic as it shows the Pentagon and an unseen President brashly ordering troops into full-scale combat, risking all-out war in Lebanon. Golan barely touches on the fundamental conflicts that created the situation there and simply offers a pack of wild-eyed, swarthy Arabs preying on passive, middle-aged Jews represented by the likes of Winters, Balsam, Bishop, and Kazan. Such horrors do happen, but they do not have to be presented as a cartoon. leave a comment
