Like the MAD MAX films, DEF-CON 4 takes a dark approach to a nuclear devastated society, as man is reduced to primitive survival instincts. Tim Choate, Kate Lynch, and John Walsch are three astronauts orbiting above Earth in a secret spaceship. Their television monitor suddenly goes blank, and the astronauts see great flashes of light emanating from Earth. Through signals picked up on the monitor, the astronauts witness human life quickly and anonymously being snuffed out. A few weeks later the ship automatically begins a descent. Unsure of what horrors he will find, Choate programs the last remaining warhead on board to explode some 60 hours after the party lands. The capsule ends up on a beach, where the astronauts encounter the first group of survivors, who kill Walsch and cannibalize his corpse. DEF-CON 4 is a bleak vision of what a nuclear nightmare could bring, reducing humanity to its most primitive and sadistic instincts. Paul Donovan's direction emphasizes the film's grimmer aspects without relying wholly on blood and action to move the story. His war scenario is frighteningly simple and not the least bit implausible. The film has some weak points, but they barely detract from its overall disturbing effect. leave a comment
