A seagoing action picture that echoes sources as disparate as THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, JAWS and TV’s The Love Boat. Captain Josephson (James Coburn) dispatches his two operatives, Alan (Costas Mandylor) and Max (David Kaufman), to guard Sabrina Masters (Sonia Satra), whose father (Clive Revill) is a longtime ally. While Alan and Max baby sit for Sabrina on a ritzy cruise ship, Josephson tries to retrieve a stolen bomb; unfortunate, the plane carrying the weapon crashes into the ocean and activates the bomb. Unbeknownst to Alan and Max, an assassin named "the Ghost" (Alex Hyde-White) has agreed to kill Sabrina and televise his handiwork, but before he can strike the submerged bomb explodes and triggers a massive water wave that drowns almost everyone aboard the cruise ship. The surviving federal agents tourists, and assassins scramble for safety. Max is killed in the line of duty, leaving Alan dependent on the unexpected bravery of crewmen like Lazo (Larry Poindexter) and ordinary travelers like teenaged Sarah (Sarah Bibb). It turns out that the Ghost's team includes a TV news anchor, Katherine (Finola Hughes), who's supposedly on board to interview celebrities; in fact, she was hired to videotape Sabrina's execution. As the vessel shifts position and its exits become blocked, the passengers try to retreat upward while a shark picks off stragglers on the flooded lower decks. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and this spy thriller/disaster movie/anti-terrorist grab-bag is enjoyable despite its ridiculous excesses. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
