Forget haunted houses and the mountains of the moon: There's no better environment to show off the wonder of the immersive IMAX 3-D experience than the deep blue sea. Narrated by Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, this spectacular 45-minute voyage to the bottom of the sea is meant to demonstrate the simultaneous diversity and community of aquatic life, while stressing the delicate balance between predator and prey that's crucial to maintaining underwater ecosystems from the Sea of Cortez to the chilly waters off British Columbia. Ultimately, however, even the film's important warning against overfishing and shark hunting is strictly secondary to the sight of all the fantastic creatures that really do seem to swim, float and crawl right off the screen. Seaweed tickles your nose; tube anemones wave like Seussian palm trees; a shimmering cloud of silver minnows dart by; a 100-pound grouper stares you down while waiting for its lunch; and countless jellyfish float overhead like hot-air balloons. In a moment of surreal beauty, a green sea turtle drifts blissfully along to the strains of some '50s-era slow-dance tune as her shell is fussily picked clean of algae by a school of black and yellow reef fish. The sudden appearances of the 6-foot wolf eel, the equally big and very aggressive Humboldt squid and the aptly named fried-egg jellyfish with its 30-foot web of stinging filaments combine with Danny Elfman's score for a few scary Peter Benchley moments. And it isn't every day you notice Foley work in a film, but the sound design is often just as impressive as the images themselves. From the castanet clatter of sea scallops as they flee the slow creep of the marauder starfish to the whoosh of the giant manta rays as they soar in like stealth fighters, you hear what you would otherwise only see, and the rich pageant of the deep sea comes fully to life. leave a comment --Ken Fox
