DEEP CRIMSON | PROFUNDO CARMESI

Don't let the title fool you: This isn't a homage to Dario Argento's cult classic DEEP RED. Based on the same 1949 crime spree that inspired THE HONEYMOON KILLERS, this darkly romantic examination of amour fou has spent the last year playing the festival circuit to considerable acclaim. Set in the northern Mexican state of Sonora in 1949, it follows the ill-fated romance of obese nurse Coral Fabre (Regina Orozco) and seedy, neurasthenic gigolo Nicolas Estrella (Daniel Giminez-Cacho), who exploits his slight resemblance to movie star Charles Boyer in the service of seducing and robbing foolish women who answer lonely-hearts ads. Insanely devoted to Estrella, Coral abandons her children to an orphanage and takes over the management of his sordid career, selecting vulnerable women and -- in the guise of his devoted sister -- deflecting suspicion as to his motives. Coral's vicious jealousy, however, transforms them from con artists to killers, and eventually brings about their downfall. Though Ripstein is widely considered one of Mexico's most accomplished filmmakers -- the son of a producer, he started out in the industry as a teenager, acting as Luis Bunuel's assistant on THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL -- few of his films have been released in the US. This, his most recent feature, is probably most interesting if you have neither seen THE HONEYMOON KILLERS nor read about the real-life "Lonely-Hearts Killers" Raymond Fernandez and Martha Beck. Despite its touches of dark humor and strikingly muddy palate, this true-crime freak show doesn't really have much to say about its lethal protagonists or their victims, beyond that the killers are so grotesque and the victims by and large so stupid that humanity is probably better off with the lot of them out of the gene pool. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
