This film omits whatever level of social comment its two predecessors had in favor of simple, almost orgasmically satisfying bloodletting. The film opens as Charles Bronson moves from Los Angeles to a rundown neighborhood of New York City, where he finds his friend has been killed by gang members. He is arrested, suspected of the crime, and locked into a cell with some of the same gang members who actually did the killing, including the leader of the gang, Gavan O'Herlihy. When one of them tries to attack him, Bronson smashes the thug's head into the bars and makes an enemy of O'Herlihy. Detective Ed Lauter recognizes Bronson from his earlier vigilante adventures and, impressed with his handling of himself in the cell, makes him an offer. Bronson will be released to clean up the streets, as long as he keeps Lauter posted on his plans. The film is manipulative in the crudest of ways, setting up characters as nice people just so they can be beaten, raped, or killed and finally drive Kersey to take up the vigilante path once more. The direction is lackluster, and the film is padded with a number of useless scenes. leave a comment
