In war-torn Poland of 1943, a few villagers of a Nazi-occupied area form an underground league to fight their oppressors. Wysocki is a member of this hit squad, knocking off Nazis and villagers who inform to German authorities. He falls in love with Kunstmann, a cabaret singer who is the
mistress of a German officer. She is next on his list of victims. The film suffers from stock portraits of evil Nazis and noble freedom fighters, but director Orzechowski manages to give his story enough surprising twists to make it work. DEATH SENTENCE was shot in Poland in 1981, shortly before
the government imposition of martial law. It took five years for it to hit a US screen....
