Paul Williams directed this interesting time-capsule essay on the way people back then lived on the fringe of the drug culture. The lead, Lyons, is fairly ho-hum but future promise can be detected in the performance of Lithgow as a snobby Harvard student who goes to Berkeley to purchase marijuana to transport back to the Ivy League. Hershey plays the hippie with whom he falls in love. Lithgow would go on to glory on Broadway in plays such as M. Butterfly, memorable supporting roles in films like THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP and TERMS OF ENDEARMENT. Filmed on location in San Francisco and Boston, this film offers an interesting comparison with THE BIG CHILL, which shows us more or less the same folks a decade later. leave a comment
