The London branch of Whitney Paine, an American bank, has been rocked to its foundations. One of its traders (Simon Slater) has blown his brains out at the boardroom table because of a $100 million loss. The firm's star trader, Daniel Pascoe (Paul McGann), fully expects to take over the vacated spot, but is chagrined when the higher-ups instead bring in Anna Schuman (Rebecca DeMornay), a shapely comer from America. Hotshot Pascoe at first sets about trying to undo Anna by hiring a paparazzo to snap pictures of her after-hours networking activities with various bosses in cars, but inevitably Pascoe and his professional adversary soon begin a wary romance. The characters in this ultraslick and empty film are all avaricious, career-crazed ciphers. Director Colin Bucksey and screenwriter Andrew MacLear reinvestigate the territory of high-finance chicanery with such formulaic and deadening solemnity that any further opportunities for satire or genuine insight are lost. leave a comment
