Prolific independent filmmaker Larry Cohen (IT'S ALIVE, Q, THE STUFF) snuck yet another film into distribution, although this film played only briefly in New York before heading for the video shelves. Cohen continued his reexamination of crime film genres begun with BLACK CAESAR (1973) adding a touch of grim humor. Billy Dee Williams stars as a charming rogue of a detective who has a reputation for leaving a trail of corpses behind during his investigations. Willing to do just about anything for money, Williams accepts $25,000 from Hallahan, a client who wants his wife murdered. Pocketing the retainer, Williams then goes to warn the wife, played by Fairchild (her famous blonde locks disguised by a black wig). Williams and Fairchild pause for a sexual liaison and then she disappears. Moments later Williams discovers Hallahan's real wife has been murdered and that his client was an impostor. Staying one step ahead of Cortese, a cop determined to nail him, Williams' investigation takes him into the high-fashion modeling world where he uncovers a drug-smuggling ring headed by Fairchild (sans wig). Ultra low-budget and filmed in the hit-and-run style that Cohen is expert at, the producers of DEADLY ILLUSION fired Cohen sometime during the production and hired FLASHPOINT (1984) director William Tannen to finish. leave a comment
