Is Craven incapable of directing a decent horror movie with the word "deadly" in the title? This was his first film after his 1984 triumph A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, and it is a big disappointment. Something of an uneasy cross between the classic FRANKENSTEIN and the 1986 cute-robot hit SHORT CIRCUIT, the film is about a brilliant young teenager, Laborteaux, an expert on artificial intelligence who has built a robot (named Bee Bee) that can learn and think for itself. Unfortunately Bee Bee also can feel hatred, and the robot rolls around the neighborhood killing off all those who have slighted its creator and his friends. When Bee Bee is eventually destroyed and Laborteaux's girlfriend killed, Laborteaux puts Bee Bee's computer chip in the girl's brain--creating a monster. Just what Craven was trying to do with this material is anybody's guess. The first half of the film seems a standard teen comedy with the robot thrown in as a twist. Then the movie turns into a rather-dull mad-scientist romp. Craven's direction is nothing more than workmanlike, and it appears that out of sheer boredom he threw two nightmare sequences into the mix. Both sequences work well in themselves (they are the most frightening parts of the film), but they are poorly integrated into the narrative, ultimately annoying, and apparently inserted by Craven in a desperate attempt to generate some excitement by falling back on A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET's former glory. The film is almost worth watching, however, for the scene in which the robot-girl throws a basketball at (THROW MOMMA FROM THE TRAIN) Ramsey, decapitating her. leave a comment
