This surprising and refreshingly taut low-budget horror film offers what most run-of-the-mill slasher films don't: a good story with a surprise ending. Anderson's parents were shot and killed 10 years earlier on Christmas Eve. Now he is plagued with nightmares of a masked hunter who he begins seeing at every turn. Although comforted by girlfriend Cummins and best friend Babbes, Anderson begins a slow descent into madness--while, as the story unfolds, a conspiracy to steal his inheritance is revealed. Director Peterson (a former Roger Corman protege) handles the material with a sure hand and keen eye. The numerous horror sequences are very frightening--the viewer is never sure of what is real and what is fantasy. Moreover, Peterson delivers the scares without excessive blood. All of the performances are convincing, especially that of Babbes (author of the screenplay), who brings a freshness to the traditional role of the wise-guy buddy. leave a comment
