1968, Movie, NR, 120 mins

A tedious bore about Caine, a patient in an alcoholic recovery sanitarium, falling for Ralli. Ralli is married to Portman, a homosexual having an affair with Carlos Pierre. They all get together and have Newman join them for a robbery of Buck, a playboy with all sorts of money. Buck is a sadist not unlike Olivier in SLEUTH and is overjoyed at the prospect of the crooks coming to his home and the opportunity to have sport with them. In the end Caine and Portman both die, Ralli goes to their dual funeral and leaves with the police, and Pierre, the boy friend of Portman, watches it all, shrugs, and exits. Monash had been producing Fox's "Peyton Place" TV series at the time and must have thought he was still in TV. This picture is at least 40 minutes too long and could use some commercials to break up the incessant talk. When Bryan Forbes is good, he is terrific. But when he has a weak producer who won't tell him that enough is enough, he can get terribly pretentious. Newman, Forbes' wife, is, as always, very professional. There is one 23-minute sequence that was an attempt to emulate the silent scene in TOPKAPI. It doesn't work at all despite Barry's haunting guitar concerto played by Renata Tarrago. Song: "My Love Has Two Faces" (Barry, Lawrence). leave a comment
