Katie McGovern (Steenburgen) is a struggling New York actress who is offered the chance for a part in a film by talent agent McDowall, who tells her that she must undergo some testing in upstate New York at the home of a film producer. She is to replace the lead actress of the already-begun film, who has disappeared. Once in the spooky mansion, Katie is transformed to look like the actress who vanished and does her video test before wheelchair-bound the producer Dr. Lewis (Rubes). Later Katie tries to make a call but finds the phone is out of order; a storm has brought the lines down, she is told. It quickly becomes obvious that there is no movie and that she is being held prisoner. She eventually learns that the video tape she starred in was part of a complicated blackmail scheme engineered by Dr. Lewis and that he still needs her to complete the scheme. Director Arthur Penn uses every trick in the horror book to pull this one off, but nothing really works, including his accent on scary noises. Everything is forced, contrived, and not too neatly lifted from other classic doppelganger films. Steenburgen does well in a role that requires her to play three parts, but McDowall and Rubes delight in their roles so much that no one, not even the most naive actress blinded with hopes for a starring role, could accept them as anything other than a couple of lunatics up to no good. Not one of Penn's better efforts. leave a comment
