This half-baked fright-night spoof follows waitress Nora Mae Edwards (Elizabeth Mannino) as she's swept off her feet by John Henry Cox (David Gregory), a handsome stranger who proposes, then takes her to the small town where he makes his living as a funeral director. In short order, Nora learns that John and other prominent townspeople are necrophiliacs. Fearing that she is about to become their next victim, she looks for a way out, but learns that most of the locals are in on the act. Just when matters look darkest, Nora wakes to discover that it has all been a dream...or has it? Poised somewhere between all-out creep show and black comedy, DEAD MATE lacks the sinister atmosphere of the former and the stylishness of the latter. Despite a generous supply of one-liners (most of which aren't delivered with much comic zest), it fails to exploit its material for either shock value or sick comedy. Competently shot but sluggishly paced, the film simply doesn't have enough talent behind or in front of the camera to redeem its unsavory subject matter. leave a comment
