Dead-Bang

1989, Movie, R, 105 mins

As cartoonish action movies go, DEAD-BANG is a solid example of Hollywood professionalism. Technically accomplished, well-directed, and well-constructed, the film zips along at an appropriately breathless clip. Though the plot entails a potentially explosive issue, the filmmakers have wisely elected not to take its social implications too seriously, concentrating instead on fulfilling genre expectations and creating a movie filled with thrills and goofy humor. Jerry Beck (Don Johnson), a homicide detective, finds his life in a shambles after his divorce. All he has going for him is his iron will to see the cases on which he works through to the end. When an African-American storekeeper is shot in a robbery and a policeman is gunned down just minutes later, Beck suddenly has plenty of activity. This is hardly innovative work from veteran director John Frankenheimer, but DEAD-BANG solidly delivers the goods for the audience that enjoys fast, well-told action films laced with humor. Often silly, more than a bit gross, and played with tongue firmly in cheek, DEAD-BANG is a good-looking, well-paced genre piece. Audiences may hunger for more substantial fare an hour after seeing it, but the movie is fun while it lasts. leave a comment
