If you've seen the Sylvester Stallone action picture DAYLIGHT, which is set in the Lincoln Tunnel, there's little reason to endure this scramble through similar disaster-movie territory. Former Los Angeles hockey star Dillon (Ted McGinley), numb with grief after the death of his family, seeks anonymity in an unchallenging job as maintenance dispatcher for the transit authority. When earthquakes strike, several riders become trapped below ground. Aboard the stalled train are shy high school-genius Newton Warner (Adam Wylie), good-hearted bimbo Suzy (Jaime Bergman), her control freak boyfriend, Griffin (Mark Kiely), and a traumatized rape victim named Savanna (Ursula Brooks). While CTA transit chief Stan Marshall (Roy Scheider) tries to contain the catastrophe above ground, Dillon discovers the trapped passengers while trying to rescue a dying CTA engineer. As Dillon starts picking his way through debris with his frightened party, Marshall asks the Deputy Mayor (Ken Olandt) to authorize a search, only to find himself being stonewalled. The publicity-seeking politician would rather sacrifice lives than reveal a terrible secret about pay-offs during the construction of the subway tunnels. Explosions rock the walls, water floods the tunnels and tempers flare as the wayfarers travel ever upwards. Impeding their progress is Griffin's insane jealousy of Dillon. Fortunately, mechanical-whiz Newton improvises some life-saving techniques. Then, amidst the rubble, Dillon spots an unregistered holding area for barrels of toxic waste. Behind Marshall's back, the Deputy Mayor orders an explosion to seal up his secret stash. Can Dillon's party survive a blast that could unleash these toxins? When viewers aren't yawning at the pre-fabricated conflicts between these paper-thin survivors, they'll be squinting to see the cast through the dark cinematography. Maybe the obscured view is a blessing; there's nothing in this battle between the subway riders, Mother Nature and crooked politicians. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
