Roger Corman's first sci-fi film launched American International to exploitation success. Brought in at a cost of $65,000, the movie concerned itself with the aftermath of T.D. Day (Total Destruction), the day of a complete nuclear holocaust. Seven survivors--Birch, his daughter Nelson, geologist Denning, gangster Connors and his moll, Jergens, scientist Hatton, and terminal radiation case Dubov--form an uneasy alliance as they make their way to a mountain retreat. Along the way they notice how the forest and animals have mutated due to the radiation. The obvious tension among the parties is overshadowed by the larger threat that looms outside the shelter when it is invaded by cannibalistic, three-eyed, four-armed, telepathic mutants with horns, led by Blaisdell. Silly but fun. leave a comment
