A surprisingly good crime tale set in a Mafia-dominated village in Sicily. Nero plays a northern Italian police captain sent into the heart of mob territory to investigate the murder of a construction supplier who refused to give the Friends their due. Nero's efforts are constantly frustrated by the citizens' unwillingness to talk and face the wrath of the local Don, Cobb. Nero finally finds a witness willing to testify, but he soon winds up dead, leaving the man's widow, Cardinale, torn between aiding the detective and keeping her mouth shut. Nero eventually finds the assassins and has them incarcerated, but his prisoners are turned loose, and he finds himself being transferred to a remote part of Italy. Cobb is great as the powerful Mafia leader, and Nero turns in a credible performance as the tireless police investigator. leave a comment
