A surprisingly good crime tale set in a Mafia-dominated village in Sicily. Nero plays a northern Italian police captain sent into the heart of mob territory to investigate the murder of a construction supplier who refused to give the Friends their due. Nero's efforts are constantly frustrated by the citizens' unwillingness to talk and face the wrath of the local Don, Cobb. Nero finally finds a witness willing to testify, but he soon winds up dead, leaving the man's widow, Cardinale, torn between aiding the detective and keeping her mouth shut.
