Set in 1935, the final year of Juan Vicente Gomez's dictatorial rule in Venezuela, THE DAY YOU LOVE ME is a film of hope. In the face of political oppression, torture, and assassination, the people of Caracas are helped through their daily existence by the tango music and films of their best-loved entertainer, Gardel. When Gardel arrives in Caracas for the premiere of his new film, he touches the lives of many, including idealistic Maria Luisa. Thanks to her boy friend, Pio, she belives the Soviet Union is a wonderful place to live and dreams of moving there with Pio. Her greatest hope is that the influential Gardel will be able to clear the way for their journey to Russia. Although first-time director Dow's heart is surely in the right place, THE DAY YOU LOVE ME suffers from clumsy execution. Running a scant 76 minutes, the film contains no fewer than a half-dozen musical interludes in which Gardel (poorly lip-synched by the actor who portrays him) bursts into song. The remaining time is spent watching characters talk about the corrupt tactics of the Gomez dictatorship, conveying the impression that the characters are merely mouthpieces for political ideology, rather than passionate, flesh-and-blood people. leave a comment
