A Day In Court

1965, Movie, NR, 70 mins

Inane Italian courtroom comedy told in four parts. The first, "Adultery in 16mm," details a woman's efforts to sue her husband for abandonment. Her husband counters with a charge of adultery and claims he can prove it with movies taken with his home-movie camera. Despite the objections from both attorneys the judge allows the evidence, and the courtroom is shocked to see the woman indeed committing adultery, with her husband's lawyer. The second tale, "The Priest and the Prostitute," stars Loren as a hooker who stole a priest's wallet. The enraged pastor follows the girl to a pool hall, where she gives the cash to her pimp. A fight ensues between the priest and the pimp and soon the police arrive and take the whole lot of them to jail. In court, the priest nobly states that he gave the money to Loren to start a new life and the judge lets him off with a suspended sentence. The third chapter, "Indecent Exposure," details the efforts of a health nut (who swims in the buff at a big, water-filled ditch in Rome) to retrieve his clothes that have been stolen. The fourth tale, "The Lustful Lieutenant," sees an aging prostitute up before a judge on a charge of soliciting. The woman reminds the judge of a woman he was in love with during the war, and though he's not positive she is the same woman, he lets her go free. The humor is barely discernible in this wasted effort. leave a comment
