Rogers once again spreads his earthy brand of comedy and philosophy as the title character, a small-town banker in the 1890s. He is a confirmed bachelor and horse trader whose main rival is the stingy and hard-boiled town deacon, with whom Rogers makes a number of trades in horse flesh. A subplot concerns city boy bank teller Taylor, who is in love with Venable, the daughter of a wealthy man. Taylor feels he cannot propose marriage due to his low income, so he places a $4,500 bet on a 10-to-1 shot in a trotting race that pays off, making him a partner in Rogers' bank and wealthy enough to marry his sweetheart. Usual Rogers hokum, this time easier to take than usual, and a good look at olden times in turn-of-the-century America. leave a comment
