Rogers once again spreads his earthy brand of comedy and philosophy as the title character, a small-town banker in the 1890s. He is a confirmed bachelor and horse trader whose main rival is the stingy and hard-boiled town deacon, with whom Rogers makes a number of trades in horse flesh. A subplot concerns city boy bank teller Taylor, who is in love with Venable, the daughter of a wealthy man.
