Daughter Of Shanghai

1937, Movie, NR, 60 mins

Good B actioner starring Wong as the Chinese-American daughter of a man who was slain by a powerful group of smugglers specializing in the illegal alien trade. The crooks, led by a powerful San Francisco society matron, had Wong's father murdered when he threatened to expose them. Wong vows vengeance and trails the hoods to their island stronghold, where she goes undercover as a dance hall girl. There she seduces one of the gang and obtains the necessary evidence to bust up their racket. Well made and fast-paced. Hollywood's penchant for reading the newspapers and attempting to capitalize on what has become topical therein is demonstrated in the title of this palatable trifle. The story has nothing to do with Shanghai, but at the time China and Japan were at war and America was intensely interested in the outcome. Thus Wong became a "Daughter of Shanghai." leave a comment
