Of course you've seen the original, but Disney's hoping the kids haven't. The plot's nearly identical to the original, but let us refresh your memory: The darn (note that Disney pays no heed to the escalating levels of profanity that have become acceptable since 1965) cat in question is D.C., who, after stumbling upon a crucial piece of evidence in the FBI's search for a millionaire couple's (Dean Jones and Dyan Cannon) kidnapped housekeeper, drags its teenage owner (Christina Ricci) and a bumbling FBI agent (Doug E. Doug, in the role originally played by Dean Jones) into a madcap hunt filled with the usual hijinks and slapstick fun. There are a few concessions to the times -- Ricci is portrayed as a modern teen: depressed, black-clad and equipped with serious attitude -- but the squeaky-clean formula that made the studio so much money in the '60s hasn't changed a whit. The surprise is that you won't hate it nearly as much as you expect -- thanks to a solid supporting cast, a cute cat and an even cuter Ricci -- and the manic pace will have the kids purring with delight. leave a comment --Ken Fox
