The Dark Knight Joins Billion Dollar Club

Christian Bale, The Dark Knight

As Heath Ledger became the second posthumous Oscar winner over the weekend, his film, The Dark Knight, wrote itself into history books as well. The Bat sequel became the fourth film to cross the $1 billion threshold in worldwide box office, joining Titanic, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Variety reports.

The Dark Knight, which was re-released in IMAX theaters Jan. 23, has now grossed ...

Dark Knight Director Chris Nolan Inks Deal for New, Non-Batman Movie

Christopher Nolan

Fans of Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan, get ready to rejoice. Batfans in general, you may be crying in your cowl.

Nolan has inked a deal with Warner Bros. to direct Inception, based on his own screenplay, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The bad news? This development delays any hope for a Dark Knight follow-up for at least a couple years.

A sci-fi action film, Inception is "set within the architecture of the mind." Nolan plans to begin shooting this summer read more

Slumdog's Danny Boyle Wins DGA Award

Danny Boyle

Notch another one for Slumdog Millionaire.

The runaway hit cemented its status as Oscar frontrunner with another key precursor win, this time for helmer Danny Boyle at the Directors Guild of America Awards. Boyle was singled out for outstanding directorial achievement in a feature film, besting David Fincher (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Ron Howard (Frost/Nixon), Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight) and Gus Van Sant (Milk).

He'll go toe-to-toe with all of them except for Nolan at the Academy Awards again (The Reader's Stephen Daldry is the other Oscar nominee). Boyle's win bodes well for Oscar glory as the DGAs have only mismatched with Oscar winners six times in 60 years. The last time was six years ago when The Pianist's Roman Polanski won the Oscar over the DGAs' choice of Rob Marshall (Chicago).

Ledger, Pitt and Jolie Score Oscar Nods

Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight

On the one-year anniversary of his death, Heath Ledger earned a supporting actor Academy Award nomination for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight.

Ledger's nod was among the most anticipated of Thursday's Oscar announcements. The best-picture nominees include The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which led with 13 total nominations, Slumdog Millionaire, Frost/Nixon, Milk and The Reader. (Check out the list of nominees here.)

Ledger, a previous lead-actor nominee for Brokeback Mountain, picked up the biggest nomination for The Dark Knight, which was shut out of the picture and director race despite momentum in recent weeks, including nominations from the three Guilds (Producers, Writers and Directors).

Oscar Nominations Preview: What to Expect Thursday

The Dark Knight

Nominations for the 81st Academy Awards will be announced Thursday, which means time's ticking to finalize predictions. Here are some things you can keep a few things in mind for the big reveal.

For almost a year, we've heard talk about The Dark Knight being a factor in the Oscar race. Their safest bet, of course, is a supporting actor nod for Heath Ledger. (Thursday, by the way, is also the one-year anniversary of his death.) Beyond that for the film, nothing's as certain, but thanks to a hat trick of precursor nominations from the three of the Guilds (Producers, Writers and Directors), The Dark Knight is looking good to land on the best picture list.

Frontrunner Slumdog Millionaire, along with Milk, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and ...

Critics Choose Slumdog, Ledger and Two Leading Ladies

Sean Penn, Anne Hathaway

The critics have spoken and it's a Slumdog and a devious Joker who have their vote.

The 14th Annual Broadcast Film Critics Association crowned Danny Boyle's sleeper hit, Slumdog Millionaire, as best picture Thursday — one of five awards it walked away with. The indie flick also picked up best director for Boyle, best writer for Simon Beaufoy, best young actor/actress for Dev Patel and best composer for A.R. Rahman.

Slumdog only missed out on best song, which went to Bruce Springsteen for "The Wrestler" in the flick of the same name.

The evening's other notable winner was Heath Ledger. The late Dark Knight star earned supporting actor honors, along with a standing ovation when his name was called.

"Anyone who's seen any of the extraordinary work that Heath did knows that I can't presume to speak for him in any way, because his voice was as unique as it was original," Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan said while accepting the award on Ledger's behalf. "But... I know that ...

Dark Knight, Slumdog Score DGA Nods

Christopher Nolan

Start finalizing your Oscar predictions. The Directors Guild of America announced its nominees for achievement in directing Thursday — the last of the Guilds to release nominations — and a certain Caped Crusader is still in the running.

The Dark Knight helmer Christopher Nolan was one of the five directors shortlisted for the feature film honor. His nomination comes on the heels of the film's PGA and WGA nods earlier this week, reinforcing the flick's status as a key Oscar player. The superhero sequel only missed out on a SAG ensemble mention.

Joining Nolan in the race are David Fincher (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) ...

Dark Knight, Underwood Are the People's Choice

Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight

A-listers reigned supreme at the 35th Annual People's Choice Awards Wednesday night at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

The Dark Knight continued to make an impact this award season by nabbing five trophies, including Favorite Movie and Favorite Action Movie. Batman himself, Christian Bale, was named Favorite Superhero and was also recognized, along with the late Heath Ledger, in the Favorite On-Screen Match-up category.

Also awarded in the film categories were Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who were missing in action from the ceremony. Pitt was named Favorite Leading Man, while Jolie was voted Favorite Female Action star.

Will Smith was a double winner, nabbing Favorite Male Movie Star and Favorite Male Action Star, while Reese Witherspoon was named Favorite Female Movie Star.

Ellen DeGeneres presented the first award of the night, filling in for Kate Hudson whom, she said, was stuck in traffic and "40 minutes away." DeGeneres quipped, "That's no way to sell a movie." Later, DeGeneres... read more
