This clever and engrossing espionage drama is set in neutral Sweden during WW I. Madeleine Godard (Vivien Leigh) runs a smart dress shop in Stockholm while secretly working as a double agent for both the German and French governments. Her method of passing information is an ingenious one--encoding messages in the sheer fabrics of her pricy designs. She begins to arouse suspicions, however, after making numerous trips to Paris. When a German baron, Karl von Marwitz (Conrad Veidt), arrives in Stockholm, he takes a liking to Madeleine. The pair fall deeply in love, and Madeleine, fearing that she will cause some of her fellow agents to be executed, begs to be relieved of her duties. She is given one final mission--to learn the identity of a German operative in Sweden. Naturally, Marwitz is the man. DARK JOURNEY is superbly acted by Leigh and Veidt with some well-defined supporting performances by Eliot Makeham, Ursula Jeans, and Margery Pickard as Madeleine's shop employees. Also worthy of mention is the excellent photography by Georges Perinal and Harry Stradling who provide some beautiful deep-focus compositions. leave a comment
