Darby's Rangers

1958, Movie, NR, 120 mins

starstarstarstar
Here is the saga of Major William Darby (James Garner), who organized a group of American rangers into a covert operations force for use in North Africa and southern Italy during WW II. Running two hours, the film is divided into halves: the opening hour devoted to the genesis of the Rangers and their subsequent training exercises, and the latter half concentrating on their enormous success as they establish beachheads and penetrate enemy lines. When not involved in battle, Darby's Rangers spend time charming the ladies. While the romantic angle gives the film a supposedly more realistic touch, it deflates much of the excitement created in the well-crafted battle scenes. Garner, fresh from the success of his television series "Maverick," makes an energetic and likable Darby. leave a comment
