A fine example of the high standards German filmmaking achieved before the Nazis came to power. This film is the Germans' view of the French Revolution, and Kortner is masterly in the role of the revolutionist Danton. The story suffers a little due to the lack of clarity on the comparative
values of Danton, Robespierre, and Marat. We see the three involved in the revolution, carrying out their historic duties, but are not sure why. Louis XVI is portrayed in a different way. Instead of the weak-willed, humorless person that he was, he is portrayed as a proud man, willing to bow to
