A fairly ordinary spy story that would have been laughed off the screen at any other time than when it was released. Garfield had been complaining about the pictures he was given to do and went on suspension. Eventually, his money ran out, and he had to do something to make a living, so he took this job. Coleman is second-billed as an Allied spy who is carrying top-secret information when she is kidnaped by Nazis, led by Olsen. She tries to escape and is hurt in a cab crash, then taken to a hospital where Garfield is interning. He's assigned to watch over her; she takes a liking to him and explains what she's up to. Olsen arrives at the hospital and pretends to be Coleman's father. As happens in so many films of this genre, the co-star never believes the star's story until it's too late. Garfield allows Olsen and his "psychiatrist" associate to sign Coleman out of the hospital on the pretext that she is suffering from delusions of paranoia. In a quietly understated role, the real leader of the spies is Massey (he doubles as the shrink). Garfield is beginning to raise an eyebrow at what's happening, so he is invited to join them at the family estate. Once there, he realizes that he and Coleman are prisoners. Garfield flies the coop,but is caught and tossed into jail when Massey testifies against him. Coleman is removed from the mansion and brought to a Nazi hideout. She has valuable shipping information, and they intend to torture her until they get it. They will then send it via shortwave to Nazi subs that wait offshore. Garfield does his second escape, this time from jail, gets to the hideout, and saves Coleman. The German subs' location is radioed to some allied bombers, and the U-boats are bombed to bits. The nation was in an uproar about the Germans in Europe and the Japanese in the Pacific and any film that was anti-Axis would get people cheering in the theaters. The movie is filled with holes and isn't terribly exciting. Garfield walks through his part; you can almost tell he was only doing it for the money. Olsen's first name derived from that of the angel Moroni whom the Mormons revere. leave a comment
