Esther Williams and Fernando Lamas were married to other people when they were brought together to make DANGEROUS WHEN WET; would that the film had been as enduring as their subsequent real-life marriage. Williams plays Katy Higgins, a member of a swimming family (the others are Charlotte Greenwood, Donna Corcoran, Barbara Whiting, and William Demarest) who decide to swim free-style across the English Channel en masse after producer Windy Webbe (Jack Carson) convinces them they can make some serious money doing so. Webbe hustles liquid vitamins and figures that he can capitalize on the Higginses in the sale of his merchandise; the family needs cash to buy a bull for their Arkansas farm. Champagne salesman Andre Lanet (Lamas) falls for Katy after he rescues her at sea (she got lost in fog while practicing for the Channel swim). A few mild complications muddle the middle but all's well for the finale, when Katy swims the Channel solo because the local authorities forbid the entire family from doing it--and though she nearly gives up at one point, Andre leaps in and inspires her to finish. The film's highlight, a live-action and animated sequence featuring Williams with Tom and Jerry, was directed by Fred Quimby with William Hanna and Joe Barbera, who left MGM to establish their own cartoon dynasty. Demarest, as the father of the swimming clan, does his usual excellent job as the foil. Songs: "I Got Out of Bed on the Right Side," "Ain't Nature Grand?," "I Like Men," "Fifi," "In My Wildest Dreams" (Arthur Schwartz, Johnny Mercer). leave a comment
