A gripping, realistic and tough-as-nails noir from director Nicholas Ray. Robert Ryan plays a brutal big-city cop who's about to lose it: Cleaning up the "human garbage" has left him on the verge of a nervous breakdown. His concerned commanding officer (Ed Begley) sends him out to the picturesque countryside to investigate a rural killing, but Ryan finds corruption wherever he goes.
